      Basketball season starts with teams contending
      Colonials stun Neptune in opener
            What an act the 2007-08 boys basketball season has to follow. Last winter was a historic one for the Freehold Regional District, as Brian Golub's Freehold Township Patriots became the first team to win the Shore Conference Tournament (SCT) championship.

      Sports Shorts
            Parker Bohn III has been elected to the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Hall of Fame. The Freehold Township High School graduate has been one of the best players on the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) tour for the last two decades. Bohn, a lefty, has won 30 PBA tour events including the 2001 USBC Masters.

            There's been plenty of serious fishing going on. Just before the rain, snow and gale-force winds last weekend, many anglers were squeezing in a few last trips for the year. Bait fish continue to remain just offshore from Sandy Hook to Barnegat Light, and alongside the bait are your choice of fish.

      Lamirande took Howell football to greater heights
      Quarterback led Rebels to first state title

            When Tim Lamirande needed his Howell High School teammates the most, they were there for him. It was only the second game of the high school football season, a home game with Freehold District rival Manalapan. Following an impressive debut win over Colts Neck the week before, Lamirande had squelched any thoughts that the Howell spread offense wouldn't be as productive.

      Boro's James was leader behind football champs
            Robert James is a coach's dream. "I love the game," said the Freehold Borough High School senior. "I love going out there and being in an atmosphere with 10 other guys who want it as badly as you do." And as much as he enjoys playing football, what makes him a coach's dream is his team-first attitude.
