      Lamirande, Jackson, Brown lead All-District football team
            Howell High School's NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV state championship topped everything in 2007. Cory Davies' Rebels won the school's first football state title in style, ripping West Windsor-Plainsboro South, 46-13, in the final played at Rutgers University. It was a remarkable game as quarterback Tim Lamirande led an offense that could do no wrong.

      Quintano, Bethel top District soccer team
            With Manalapan taking care of the state, and Howell taking care of the Shore Conference, the Freehold Regional District won everything there was to win in boys soccer. John Natoli's Braves capped a memorable three-year run by capturing their first state championship.

      Fish On
      After a few weeks, the fish are back
            There was no need for a fish finder, but if you had turned it on, you would have read "fish" and "bait fish" from Sandy Hook to Barnegat Light up to 10 feet thick. There were so many bass, you could lose count within a couple of hours. I started an afternoon trip with my good friend Dan Zino aboard Fins on Feathers from Leonardo.

      F.B. state champions dominate District team
            Freehold Borough's girls were not only the class of the Freehold District, but the state as well. Elyse Bizzozzaro's Colonials ruled girls soccer in 2007 as they overcame all the obstacles that a defending champion has to hurdle on the way to their second straight NJSIAA Group III state championship.

      Blend of vets, frosh has BCC winning
            Just a few games into the 2007-08 campaign, Brookdale Community College's women's basketball coaches Joanne Cobb and Marianne Campacci have a mixture of sophomores and freshmen that has clicked. That may seem early in the campaign for a team breaking in that many new players, but the proof is in BCC's start.

      Sports Shorts
            Karissa Leary of Marlboro, a freshman at Susquehanna University (Selinsgrove, Pa.) was a member of the school's women's cross country team. The Crusaders finished fourth at the Landmark Conference championships and 15th at the NCAA Mideast qualifier.
