      Howell, Freehold Boro hosting NJSIAA football playoff games
            Division champions Howell and Freehold Borough improved their state playoff seedings over the weekend. Howell topped Marlboro, 27-6, while Freehold Borough staged a frantic fourth-quarter rally to top Matawan, 35-28. Cory Davies' Howell Rebels likely secured the No. 1 seed in Central Jersey Group IV with their win Saturday in Marlboro.

      Freehold Borough reaches CJ semis
            It's the time of the season when style points don't count. All that matters is advancing. In a match that was eerily similar to last fall, Freehold Borough girls soccer team advanced to the Central Jersey Group III semifinals with a 1-0 win over visiting Princeton.

      Braves, Cougars, Colonials win cross-country titles
            Of the three cross country division championships won this year by area schools, the least expected was the Freehold Borough girls. Colts Neck's girls were the defending champions in A North and loaded again. Their win was expected.

            Austyn Fobes had a pretty good idea what to expect at Saturday's NJSIAA Central Jersey I Sectional Gymnastics Meet at Manalapan. "From the Shore [Conference], you have an idea where you're going to place," said the Howell sophomore.

      Harriers place second; CN girls runner-up
            Manalapan's Robby Andrews and Colts Neck's Brianna Jackucewicz threw their hats into the rings as probable state cross country contenders. Although each finished second at the Shore Conference Championships at Holmdel Park on Oct. 29, they came up with competitive efforts.

      Advance to CJ soccer semifinal
            Kyle Bethel had tried the play often this year, but it hadn't worked until Friday afternoon. "It's a cross in the box behind the defenders and in front of the goalie," said the Howell forward. Friday, in the Central Jersey Group IV quarterfinal at Howell, the play produced the only goal of the match as Howell advanced 1-0 over Montgomery.

      Forys shines in collegiate cross country debut
            Craig Forys had been looking forward all year for the chance to run in his University of Michigan (UM) singlet. A scholastic national champion at Colts Neck High School, Forys had run two races while unattached for the Wolverines during the collegiate cross country season.

            Marlboro's Ty Jensen was the No. 3 runner for the Brigham Young University men's cross country team at the Mountain West Conference Championships. With the Marlboro High School graduate running his best race of the season, seventhplace overall, BYU won the conference championship for the fourth straight year. BYU edged New Mexico, 46-51.

      Bass fishing starting to come alive in area
            Surf reports from Ortley Beach north to the Sandy Hook rips are finally producing some keeper size bass. Wind conditions made it tough to get out but anglers off the surf made up for it. Heavier rods and weight were able to produce bass from 12-18 pounds. According to surf anglers, there are plenty of bass headed our way.
