      Rebels edge Cougars, 28-26, in football season opener
            Until a team faces the pressure, a coach never knows how it's going to react. All the preseason scrimmages and workouts matter little when the games count. Howell High School football coach Cory Davies learned the most valuable of lessons on the afternoon of Sept. 8 about his Rebels - they will not panic when things aren't going their way.

            At this time last year, Colts Neck High School's girls cross country team was on a mission: Portland, Ore., home to the Nike Team Nationals (NTN). Feeling slighted by the NTN selectors in 2005, nothing short of a trip to the NTN in 2006 would satisfy the Cougars.

      Youngsters hit the high seas in search of a big catch
            John and Diane O'Connor from East Brunswick took the family on their first party boat bluefish fishing trip. They went out on the Miss Belmar Princess. Son Max and daughter Jackie caught their first bluefish on jigs. Nephew Mike Crispiano of Staten Island, N.Y., caught his first as well. His sister, Marisa, was the best with three blues.

            Equipped with more depth than recent seasons, Rich Garretson's Manalapan Braves girls soccer team is looking to rejoin the Shore's elite. Over the last few campaigns, the Braves have had a habit of getting off to very slow starts, turning things around in the second half and just sneaking into the state playoffs.

      Sports Shorts
            Manalapan's Andrew Robinson, who competes for the YMCA of Western Monmouth County, finished 20th in the one-mile open water ocean swim conducted by Jersey Shore/Manasquan Beach. The swim was held at Manasquan Beach and was the first time that Robinson, who is a lifeguard at Manasquan, participated in an open water swim.
