Writer has several suggestions to preserve state's open space

Iam always amused by the frequent letters promoting the preservation of open space. Apparently due to the abundance of open space between such writers' ears, they don't realize that their collective actions are the root cause of the "problem" they seek to "remedy."

Some inconvenient truths: The spaces their houses occupy were once open space. Their houses weren't magically there at the time of creation. They were built by businessmen - who they now love to demonize as "greedy" - and eagerly bought by millions of Americans as capitalism allowed them to successfully fulfill the American dream of a single-family house in suburbia.

As I see it, the open space proponents have selfishly taken their slice of open space. Now they want to prevent others from getting their share, especially if there is the risk that the "wrong kind" might encroach on their utopia. How snobby and elitist.

If they really want open space for future generations, here are some suggestions:

• Raze your house, deed it to your town for perpetual use as open space, and live with your parents and/or children in a single multi-generational dwelling, located near your job(s) so the state doesn't have to consume open space to build more roads to accommodate your gas-hogging SUVs.

• Stop making more babies. Contrary to what so many think, making babies is not a sign of love. Like immigrants, they represent future demands on open space as well as the school systems that contribute so much to the tax bills everyone complains about.

• Write you congressmen and demand an end to all tax breaks for home ownership and dependents.
