Mike McArthur had built a winning football program at the school, but last fall the Cougars moved up to Group IV and to the Constitution Division in the Shore Conference.       Brian Sears wasn't worried about the post position. As the harness driver saw it, he had a strong enough horse in Always A Virgin to win from anywhere. So, even though his colt would start from the outside at post position eight for Labor Day Monday's $297,500 Cane Pace Final at Freehold Raceway, Sears remained confident.

      Marlboro's Joey Piccolo, 12, was selected to represent New Jersey at the State Wars hockey tournament held in Chicago. It was the second straight year that Piccolo was named to the New Jersey team. New Jersey advanced to the bronze medal round, where it fell to a team from Georgia, 3-1, to finish fourth. Piccolo scored New Jersey's lone goal.
