      Cougars set for action with speedy Jackson
      Cougars open gridiron season at home Saturday against Howell Rebels
            Colts Neck was a team that had to prove it belonged in 2006. Mike McArthur had built a winning football program at the school, but last fall the Cougars moved up to Group IV and to the Constitution Division in the Shore Conference. Some questioned whether or not the Cougars were ready for the move up in class.

            When a new coach takes over a football program, there is usually an adjustment period. Players have to learn a new system and likewise the coach has to become familiar with his players and what they do best. Manalapan High School avoided this scenario earlier in the year when Tom Gallahue was elevated to head coach.

      Always A Virgin wins Cane Pace at Freehold
            Brian Sears wasn't worried about the post position. As the harness driver saw it, he had a strong enough horse in Always A Virgin to win from anywhere. So, even though his colt would start from the outside at post position eight for Labor Day Monday's $297,500 Cane Pace Final at Freehold Raceway, Sears remained confident.

            Marlboro's Joey Piccolo, 12, was selected to represent New Jersey at the State Wars hockey tournament held in Chicago. It was the second straight year that Piccolo was named to the New Jersey team. New Jersey advanced to the bronze medal round, where it fell to a team from Georgia, 3-1, to finish fourth. Piccolo scored New Jersey's lone goal.
