            Freehold Borough has been making steady progress under head coach Mark Ciccotelli. In his first two years with the Colonials, the team has taken steps toward regaining its footing as a winning program. They were a Thanksgiving Day win away from .500 last year.

            Areturn to the basics helped Freehold Township and head coach Dominick Lepore turn its 2006 season around, and is reason for optimism this fall. Lepore gave the spread offense a whirl last fall and after a 0-5 start, he figured it was time to do what Freehold Township does best, play physical football.

            Chris Ranieri, of Manalapan, has been signed to a contract by the New Jersey Jackals of the Independent Canadian America Baseball League. Ranieri, a shortstop, starred at Alvernia College (Reading, Pa.), where he was a First Team All-Pennsylvania Athletic Conference pick this spring. In his two years at Alvernia, he had an impressive .383 batting average.

            Brookdale Community College's (BCC) women's soccer team begins the 2007 season as a marked squad. As if being the national runner-up last year weren't enough, Frank Lawrence's Jersey Blues begin the season No. 3 in the junior college coaches' poll. That's just fine with him.
