      Area student attends conference

MARLBORO - National 4-H Council and Carhartt have named Sarah Sakowski of the Morganville section of Marlboro as a 4-H Carhartt Scholar. This distinction places Sarah among 170 other 4-H youth attending Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) as a member of the second class of 4- H Carhartt Scholars. Sarah attended CWF the week of July 15 at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Md.

CWF is a civic education and leadership program organized by National 4-H Council every sum mer for high school youth. Since 1963, CWF has provided leadership opportunities for 4-Hers to experi ence the nation's capital and gov ernmental processes firsthand.

4-H delegates from across the country broaden their apprecia tion and respect for themselves and others in the world through civic workshops, committees, field trips and social events, according to a press release. Participants learn and practice skills intended to make them better citizens and suc cessful individuals. More than 2,000 youth will attend CWF in 2007.

"I had an outstanding experi ence at CWF. I learned about the different national monuments and gained a better understanding of how our government runs. I also made new friends, met new people and had an experience that I will remember for years to come," Sarah said.

"Carhartt's support of Citizenship Washington Focus allows 4-H to expand leadership opportunities to even more youth through the 4-H Carhartt Scholars program," said Donald T. Floyd Jr., National 4- H Council president and CEO. "This investment in civic engagement gives today's youth leaders the skills and knowledge to grow into even better leaders tomorrow."

Carhartt is the manufacturer of premium workwear.

4-H is a community of more than 6.5 million young people across America who are learning leader ship, citizenship and life skills. National†4-H Council is the na tional, private sector, nonprofit partner of the 4-H Youth Development Program and its par - ent, the Cooperative Extension System of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
