      Braves coaching staff has Staten Island connection
            BY TIM MORRIS Staff Writer The Outerbridge Crossing has been more than a bridge connecting Staten Island with New Jersey. Like the 6 degrees of separation, you can trace the roots of area football coaches there. Staten Island, it turns out, has been the cradle for Freehold District gridiron coaches, especially at Manalapan High School.

      Freehold Twp. Seniors go 2-2 at World Series
            Just having the opportunity to see how his players responded to their first World Series experience made it all worthwhile for Freehold Township manager Anthony Cirillo. His Little League Senior League (ages 15-16) all-stars went 2-2 in Bangor, Maine, last week, but the highlight for Cirillo was seeing the faces of his players as they took it all in.

      Manalapan stars make it back-to-back titles
            They may only be 10 years old, but the players on Manalapan's Cal Ripken All-Star team sure have learned what it means to be victorious. For the second year in a row, head coach Buster Caggiano led his team to the District title. And though his team lost 6- 5 in the state championship game to Bridgewater, Caggiano has been extremely impressed.

      Team advances to state final
            When Vince Luongo read the familiar names on the list of the Manalapan Baseball Association Babe Ruth 15-year-old all-stars that he would be coaching, he had a pretty good idea it was going to be a good summer. Many on the list had played on last year's 14-year-old championship team and were back for more.

            Walking around the streets of Beijing and China's other large cities, Justin Frick was struck at how small the world really is. With McDonald's and KFC everywhere, he could have been in any city in the United States. "The world is more interconnected than you realize," said Frick.

      New-look Hawks face familiar expectations
            Every football season brings new challenges. Last year, for Dave Callahan's Monmouth University Hawks, it was handling the pressures of high expectations. With a 10-2 record, a Northeast Conference championship and a bowl berth (the Gridiron Football Classic played on Kessler Field against San Diego), the veteran Hawks delivered.

            The Manalapan Bombers had the opportunity to play on their field of dreams recently when they participated in the Cooperstown Dreams Park Tournament. The tournament was played on the baseball diamond at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. There were 96 teams competing in the five-day tournament and the Bombers finished 24th.
