            Freehold Raceway, the nation's oldest daytime harness racing track, swings back into action tomorrow afternoon. Post time is 12:30 p.m. The highlight of the fall/winter 2007 meet will be the Cane Pace, the first leg of the Pacing Triple Crown, on Sept. 3.

      After yet another state championship win
            If North Cumberland thought it was in the driver's seat, it was sadly mistaken.Playing close to home at the South Vineland Little League fields and with plenty of fans to cheer them on, North Cumberland's Senior League (ages 15-16) all-stars had every reason to be confident Wednesday night when they played Freehold Township for the state championship.

            With many of the players returning from last year's District 19 10-year-old championship team, manager Al Molina Sr. knew his Freehold Township Little League Major League 11-year-old all-star team would be good. Indeed, Freehold Township National swept through district pool play without breaking a sweat, going 5-0.

            A state Department of Agriculture farm tour for state legislators on July 31 included a stop at the state's largest standardbred breeding farm, Perretti Farms in Cream Ridge. The 2005 Harness Horse of the Year, Rocknroll Hanover, now stands as a stallion at the farm. Anthony Perretti is the general manager of the farm.

      State LL director collects Negro League memorabilia
            Whenever Tony Richardson makes a presentation in a classroom, the first question he asks the students is "Who are the Black Yankees?" The usual reply is Derek Jeter and maybe Bernie Williams. Then Richardson informs the youngsters that the New York Black Yankees were a baseball team in the old Negro League that played in the late 1930s and '40s.

            Manalapan Parks and Recreation is sponsoring the Rising Star Soccer Camp Inc. from Monday through Aug. 17 at Manalapan High School. The camp will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day. Rising Star Soccer Camp Inc. will also be in Freehold Township Aug. 20-24 at the M.W. Errickson School on Route 524. The camp will have the same daily hours, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

            What made the Marlboro Little League North's 9/10-year-old District 19 championship fun for manager Mike Durso was watching his club jell. "We practiced hard in the beginning and that translated to the team's play during the tournament," he said.

            One of the biggest challenges for the coach of an all-star team is to get his players to feel like a team. And in baseball, teamwork is essential for success. Bill Schirmacher, vice president of the Manalapan Baseball and Softball Association, knew this was what he was facing when he was picked to coach the 13-year-old squad in Manalapan's Babe Ruth League.

            Lloyd Burman, 13, of Manalapan, participated in the sixth annual Sports Broadcasting Camp held at the Yogi Berra Museum on the campus of Montclair State University, Little Falls. Bruce Beck, of WNBC-TV, and Ian Eagle, a New Jersey Nets announcer and WFAN personality, conducted the camp, which was open to male and female students, ages 13 and over.
