      Ocean wins by slowing Monmouth's offense
      Field position key to 11-10 Shore 44 victory
            Shore 44 may not have produced the expected fireworks, but it managed to provide drama. On paper, the Shore Conference Football Coaches Association's Shore 44 Football Classic, played Friday night at Brick Township High School, had all the makings of a high-scoring affair.

            Before the start of the District 11 playoffs, Keith Weber, the manager of the North Howell Little League's Senior League All-Star Team, took his club for a walk. They strolled over to the District 11 championship banner from the 2006 season, which was on the North Howell Little League fence. It needed company.

            Manager Gregg Heinzmann had the rare luxury of never having to worry when he turned to his bench. His Freehold Township National Little League Minor League (11-12-year-olds) all-star team was stacked, one through 13. Ruggieri has made it an exciting season for the Colonials, dramatically winning three games for them in their last at-bat that that put them in a position to nail down one of the four playoff berths available.

      Jonas gymnasts sweep top four, win Level 5 state title
            All the championships won during the competitive season by the Jonas Gymnastics' Level 5 team were just a prelude for bigger and better things. Jonas, based in Morganville, won the boys team title at the New Jersey State Gymnastics Championship, held in Lyndhurst earlier this year.

      Marlboro MVP Softball League honors Droppa
            The Marlboro MVP Softball League lost one of its most popular players earlier this year. John Droppa, who lived in Freehold, lost his battle with cancer in February at the age of 44. Droppa, who worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Summit before moving to the Monroe Township Post Office in 2001, had a passion for the game that rubbed off on his teammates and opponents alike.

            Manalapan's Pat DiLeo remained hot on the Junior Golf America tournament tour this summer. The Manalapan High School junior won the 16-18-year-old Masters Division at the two-day tournament hosted by the Colts Neck Golf Course. DiLeo, a frequent winner this summer, carded a 68-71-139 for the 36-hole tournament, winning by four strokes over David Lynch of Rising Sun, Md.
