      Obituaries

      Herbert U. Caravella Jr.

      Mr. Caravella, 78, of Marlboro, died June 3, 2007, at Veterans Administration Lyons Hospital, Lyons. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he resided in Irvington, Aberdeen and Freehold prior to relocating to Marlboro four years ago. He was an electrical worker at Westinghouse, Union, and a maintenance worker at Bell Labs, Holmdel. He served with the U.S. Army and was wounded during combat during the Korean Conflict, and received the Purple Heart. He was a past member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4745, Cliffwood section of Aberdeen. He was predeceased by his wife, Lorraine Caravella in 1989. He is survived by a son, Herbert U. Caravella III of Marlboro; and three grandchildren. A funeral service was held at the Day Funeral Home, Keyport, followed by interment at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Keyport.

      Stephen M. Houtman

      Mr. Houtman, 55, of Atlantic Highlands, died May 23, 2007, at home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had lived in Englishtown and Avenel before moving to Atlantic Highlands 30 years ago. He was a member of the first graduating class of Marlboro High School, in 1970. Mr. Houtman worked for Shell Oil Co./Motiva Enterprises, Sewaren, for 34 years. He was predeceased by his mother, Pauline Daltillo Houtman; and a niece, Samantha Crane. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Jo Ann Rupy Houtman; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kelly Ann Houtman of Atlantic Highlands, and Tracy Lynn and Michael Kelly of Chambersburg, Pa.; three grandchildren; his father, Richard, and his wife Charlotte, who also was Stephen's mother-in-law, of North Fort Myers, Fla.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Janice Houtman of Milltown, and Michael and Linda Houtman of Cranbury; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Geoff Crane of Florida; his father-in-law, Jack Rupy, and his wife Lois of South Carolina; a brother-in-law, Steven Rupy and his wife Marti of Hummelstown, Pa.; four nephews; and a great-niece. The John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown, was in charge of arrangements.       Jeanne Schreck

      Mrs. Schreck, 87, of Silvermead, Freehold Township, died May 25, 2007, at The Manor Care Center, Freehold Township. She was born in Wilmington, Del., and had lived in Mariners Harbor, Staten Island, N.Y., and Marlboro before moving to Silvermead. Prior to retiring in 1987, Mrs. Schreck was the director of volunteers for Freehold Area Hospital (now CentraState Medical Center) for 17 years. She had previously been the hospital's first secretary to the administrator. She was a member of the American Society of Directors of Volunteer Services and the New Jersey Association Directors of Volunteer Services. She was also a founding member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Robertsville Volunteer Fire Company, Marlboro, as well as a member and past president of the Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Schreck was predeceased by her husband, Vincent A., in 2000; a son, Vincent George, in 2001; two brothers, Edward and Robert Beauchamp; and a sister, Betty Dilks. Surviving are a daughter, Lynda Jeanne Curcio of Freehold Township; six grandchildren and their spouses, Cynthia and Dr. Allen Ongsiako of Holmdel, Andrea and William Clauser of Point Pleasant, Ellyn and David Dobson of Howell, Debra and George Leonge of West Windsor, and John Curcio and Leanne and Brian Cook, all of Freehold; and 13 great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Freehold, with the Rev. Frank Hebert officiating. Internment was private, with the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township, in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 2550 Route 1, North Brunswick, 08902; or the American Lung Association of New Jersey, 1600 Route 22 East, Union 07083-3407.

      Dorothy Meyer Strauber

      Mrs. Strauber, 86, of Freehold Township, died May 25, 2007, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she had resided in Lynbrook, N.Y., and Asheville, N.C., before moving to Freehold Township in 1972. She graduated from New York University's School of Commerce in 1942. During a long career in public relations, she promoted many entertainment personalities, including dance icon Martha Graham, Luise Rainer, Metropolitan Opera star Marjorie Lawrence, as well as the images of various companies. While living in North Carolina, she was the sales director of the former Battery Park Hotel in Asheville. In New Jersey, she served as the promotion director for the Freehold Raceway and as the director of consumer affairs for Foodarama Supermarkets Inc. As an active amateur radio operator, she was one of the founders of the Single Sideband Amateur Radio Association, co-editor of The Sidebander, and Sideband editor of CQ Amateur Radio Communications & Technology magazine. She was also a longtime member of the Jersey Shore Rose Society (a local chapter of the American Rose Society) and was active in the formation of Freehold Area Hospital (formerly CentraState Medical Center), where she served on different committees. Most recently, she had been a volunteer for CentraState's Short Stay Unit. Mrs. Strauber was predeceased in 1984 by her ex-husband, Irving L. Strauber, and in 1981 by a son, Robert Henry Strauber. Surviving are two daughters, Peggy Shulman of Irving, Texas, and A.J. Rowbottom of North Hollywood, Calif.; a son, Andrew Strauber of Culver City, Calif.; and four grandsons. Cremation was private, with Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, in charge of arrangements.

      Barbara O'Donnell

      Mrs. O'Donnell, 72, of Freehold Township, died May 27, 2007, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. She was born in South River and had resided in Freehold Township since 1954. Prior to retiring 20 years ago, she was a receptionist for AT&T Bell Laboratories, Freehold. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold, and a member of the church choir. She was also a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Rose of Lima No. 737, and the Telephone Pioneers of America. Mrs. O'Donnell was predeceased by a son, Matthew, in 1990, as well as two brothers, Leo and Matthew Cannon. Surviving are her husband, William F. O'Donnell; three daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Thomas Clark of Rumson, Colleen and Michael Gagliano of Toms River, and Kathleen and George Bente of Upper Saddle River; two brothers, Brian Cannon of South River and James Cannon of South Amboy; two sisters, Margaret Hall of Millstone and Mary Jane Kohlhepp of South River; and four grandchildren. The funeral liturgy was offered at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by interment at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, P.O. Box 78960, Phoenix, AZ 85062-8960.

      Herbert Borden

      Mr. Borden, 81, of Hobe Sound, Fla., died May 30, 2007, at the Edgewater Manor nursing home in Hobe Sound. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and had resided in Freehold for 51 years before moving to Florida five years ago. Prior to retiring 18 years ago, he was an electrician for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 25 years. He had previously been employed as a chicken farmer in Freehold Township and was also the former owner of Midway Bagels, Howell. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II and a member of the Jewish War Veterans. Mr. Borden is survived by his wife of 57 years, Manya (Levinson) Borden; two sons, Glenn Borden of Toms River and Mitchell Borden of New York City; and three grandchildren. A graveside service was held at Freehold Hebrew Benefit Society Cemetery, Freehold Township. Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.
