      Nominations sought for Freehold honors

      The Freehold High School Hall of Fame is committed to recognizing and honoring graduates of Freehold High School, Freehold Borough, who have distinguished themselves in a variety of fields (excluding athletics) and have proven to be positive role models to current high school students. Past honorees include sculptor Jim Gary, television and Broadway star David Garrison, and vocalist Juanita Baskerville Brown.

      Anyone who knows of a Freehold graduate who meets the criteria may send that person's name, year of graduation and a brief explanation of their career achievements to Susan Shrott, Freehold High School, 2 Robertsville Road, Freehold 07728. The person who is nominating a graduate must include their name and a contact number.

      The committee is also seeking the names of staff members who worked at Freehold High School for 25 or more years for inclusion in the Quarter Century Club. Please send the names, years of service, job titles and dates of employment to the address above. All information must be received by Sept. 1.

      receives scholarship

      Freehold Township High School senior Stefanie Kern is one of 20 New Jersey students recently recognized by the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association (NJPSA) as a Student Lead-ership Scholarship recipient. Stefanie was awarded $2,500 at a recognition ceremony held on May 30 at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Monroe Township. NJPSA Executive Director JoAnn Bartoletti, Assistant Executive Director Charles Stein, and various other New Jersey education leaders attended the scholarship luncheon.

      "We are proud to recognize this year's Student Leadership Scholarship recipients," Bartoletti said. "NJPSA works each day to foster excellence in New Jersey education. Students like Stefanie represent the success of New Jersey's learning communities."

      The Student Leadership Scholarships were awarded to graduating high school seniors who have demonstrated leadership in school activities. In addition to an outstanding record of academic excellence and student leadership, Stefanie is an active member of the Junior States of America, where she worked on their cabinet as a Chapter of Internal Affairs Agent, liaising with students from all across New Jersey.

      earns scholarship

      Michael Alerhand, the son of Oscar and Fanny Alerhand of Marlboro, received a 2007 Monmouth County Education Association scholarship. Michael is a graduate of the Peddie School, Hightstown. In addition to having earned honors grades, he is president of the Jewish Heritage Club, news editor of The Peddie News, a member of the Mu Alpha Theta National High School Math Honors Society and a varsity soccer and lacrosse player. Last year, Michael was selected to participate in the Youth Leadership Institute and became a finalist in the National Hispanic Recognition Award. He was honored at the MCEA dinner on May 16. Michael will attend the University of Virginia in the fall.
