      Idea of teachers and students carrying guns is way over the line
      "... guns are used against their owners at a much higher rate than they are ever used to protect them."
            I simply have to respond to the letter published in last week's News Transcript ("Gun-Free School Zones Do Not Deter Attackers," May 2) advocating the end of "gun-free" school zones. In the letter, the author-writer suggests that the recent tragedy at Virginia Tech might not have occurred if some of the teachers and students had the right to bear arms.

      Chief says officers would have welcomed trial in lawsuit
      "These officers did absolutely nothing wrong and were removed from the lawsuit prior to the settlement that was arranged by the attorneys who represent the insurance carrier."
            For the past 28 years that I have been in law enforcement I cannot remember ever seeing an officer, let alone two, so passionate in their desire to confront their accusers in a court of law. The two officers I am referring to are Manalapan Patrolman Steven Turner and Patrolman Peter Chalfin.

      Firing of Circuit City employees irks Howell resident
            Shame on Circuit City Stores Inc. who fired 3,400 of its highest paid hourly workers and will hire replacements willing to work for less. It is people like this that require a labor union. I will never shop at a Circuit City store. I welcome Best Buy to Howell.

      Alliance: Blood donations and alcohol mix may be lethal
            The American Red Cross has gained a reputation for helping those in need, providing care, concern and safety. It is therefore incredulous to find this humane organization condoning the use of alcohol. The American Red Cross in conjunction with local central New Jersey bar owners has created "A Pint for A Pint" program to encourage blood donations.
