      Talent is everywhere for District track meet
      Howell hosting meet Thursday
            The track and field talent in the Freehold Regional District is so powerful that tomorrow night's District Track and Field Championships is a beginning, rather than an end in itself. The talent competing for District gold at Howell High School is the same talent that will be vying for county, conference and state titles later in the year.

            In-house competition has made a good Freehold Borough boys tennis team even better. The Colonials return five of the seven starters from the team that won the Shore Conference B North Division championship in 2006.

            With a 113-year tradition dating back to 1895, the Penn Relays are all about history. Last week, Colts Neck's indomitable duo of Craig Forys and Ashley Higginson put in historic performances that highlighted a big weekend for area athletes at Philadelphia's Franklin Field.

      Baseball, softball teams face week of decision
      Showdowns will determine A North races
            By the end of this week, the baseball and softball races in the Shore Conference A North Division should be much clearer. Manalapan and Colts Neck find themselves major players in both races. It's a four-way race in A North softball between Manalapan, Colts Neck, Middletown North and Middletown South.

      Team work has Howell volleyball team winning
            Howell took everyone by surprise last spring when the Rebels made their varsity debut in boys volleyball. Despite being a first-year program, the Rebels went 11-8 and made it to the postseason state tournament - a stunning development by any standard.

      Patriots team closing in on its first girls lacrosse championship
            Freehold Township's girls lacrosse team will be playing the biggest match in school history tomorrow afternoon. An opportunity to win the program's first championship will be at stake when Ocean Township makes a call. Nikki Hastings' Patriots began this week with a perfect 8-0 record and were one win away from a championship.

      Freehold Borough girls looking toward SC tournament
            Teams may soon be forced to reappraise the Freehold Borough golf program. The Colonials haven't been taken seriously on the golf links before, but all that is changing. Thanks to a talented freshman and some serious upperclassmen, Freehold Borough is no longer an easy walk around the links.

      Sports Shorts
            Earl Gray, a junior at the University of Maryland, ran the lead-off leg on the Terrapins' 4x400 relay team that finished second at the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Gray, Jeremy Samuels, Kyle Rauser and Sean Lowe ran a 3:10.395 in finishing second to Clemson (3:09.895).
