      Braves still with chance to make state playoffs
      Freehold Twp., Colts Neck boys are in
            The pulse may be a little weak, but at least the Manalapan High School boys basketball team has a pulse. With Saturday being the deadline for teams to be .500 or better in order to qualifying for the state playoffs, the Braves must win three of their four games this week in order to climb to .500. They are 7-9.

      Gagliano now Howell's winningest coach
            John Gagliano is not one to draw attention to himself. Very humble, he always wants to give the credit for the success of the Howell High School wrestling team to others, most notably, his wrestlers and fellow coaches. Gagliano, though, couldn't avoid the spotlight last Wednesday night (Jan. 24) when he became Howell High School's all-time winningest coach.

      Rams top Rebels in SCT wrestling semifinals
      First loss for A North champions
            Howell's attempt to crash Jackson's and Southern Regional's wrestling party was derailed by the host Rams on Saturday. Jackson, the defending Shore Conference Tournament champion and Southern, last year's finalist, are ranked No. 1 and No. 3 in the state, and have been the Shore area's top programs the past few years.

            If anyone needed a reminder of the quality of depth on the Colts Neck girls indoor track and field team, they got a full dose of it Thursday at the Monmouth County Relays.

      YMCA swimmers smash meet records at Maryland Winterfest
            Swimmers from YMCA of Western Monmouth County excelled at the recent Maryland Winterfest meet held at the University of Maryland. The 9/10 boys continued their age group dominance in both the relays and in individual events.

      Howell throwers shine at Rebel Shot Put Series
            Records continued to fall at the Rebel Indoor Shot Put Series at Howell High School. Old Bridge and host Howell were the big winners on Jan. 24, with three individual winners. It was the second of four Wednesday night competitions. Jorge Merino of Old Bridge set the Sophomore Boys meet record with his 46-11 1/4 mark that topped the 46-1 by St. Peter's (Staten Island, N.Y.

            The Monmouth Gymnastics Academy's Cyclones, a boys' competitive team, distinguished themselves at the Brian Babcock Invitational held in Allentown, Pa. The Cyclones' Level 7 team finished first. Akash Modi led the team placing fourth in the ages 10-11 all-around and winning the pommel horse.
