      Young Cougars are determined to do their best
            What John Truhan has discovered in the first month of the basketball season is that his Colts Neck Cougars will not be satisfied with being second best. With three freshmen in the starting lineup, it would have been easy for the Cougar girls to be happy just to have reached the final of the WOBM Classic, held in the Ritacco Center at Toms River High School.

            The Christian Brothers Academy basketball team found itself in a rather unfamiliar position coming into this week. The Colts, a perennial Shore Conference and state powerhouse that lost only two games last season and just five the past two years, took a 6-3 record into Monday's game at Marlboro.

      Patriot swimmers in hunt for two division crowns
      Boys and girls teams undefeated in dual meets
            Freehold Township's swimmers have the chance to win a pair of Shore Conference A North Division titles before the month is over. One would not be a surprise; the other would. The boys team has been the surprise. With graduation hitting the team that was 8-4 hard, coach Melissa Merolla thought that her team would be in for a rebuilding season.

      State-ranked teams clash at Ocean tonight
            It won't be for the A North title this year, but tonight's wrestling match between Howell and Ocean Township has all the makings of a championship match. "There's a lot at stake," said Rebels head coach John Gagliano. Howell, 10-0, is ranked seventh in the state and Ocean, 6-1, is No. 11.

      State Group Relays heat up indoor track & field season
      Marlboro's Unachukwu shines at Dartmouth
            Marlboro got a head start on this weekend's NJSIAA State Relays by competing at the Dartmouth Relays in Hanover, N.H., on Saturday. The meet, held on the campus of Dartmouth College, attracted some of the best scholastic track and field athletes from the Northeast and Canada.

            Lindsey Gallo was ranked No. 2 in the country for the women's 1,500 meters/mile for 2006 by the Track and Field News . The former state champion and All-American at Howell High School now runs professionally for Reebok. In 2006, Gallo, who finished second at the U.S. national championships, had a season's best of 4:07.51 for the 1,500 and 4:40.35 for the mile.
