      Obituaries

      Helen Hogan

      Mrs. Hogan, 87, of Middletown, died Aug. 20 at Montgomery Care Center, Freehold Township. Born in Middletown, she was a lifelong resident. Mrs. Hogan was a security person at Food Circus Foodtown, Middletown, from 1977 until her retirement in 1990. She was predeceased by her husband, William Frederick Hogan Sr., in 1977. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William and Laura Hogan of Marlboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Lorraine Renee and Joseph D'Antuono of Howell; a brothers, Stephen Olnas of Rome, N.Y.; and three grandchildren. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. The Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.

      Marie Theresa Curran

      Ms. Curran, 76, of Jackson, died Aug. 26 at Bartley Health Care Nursing & Rehabilitation, Jackson. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she had lived in Staten Island, N.Y., for 40 years before moving to Jackson three years ago. Prior to retiring in 1990, she was a financial clerk for Merrill Lynch, New York City, for 43 years. She was also a former parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Staten Island. Ms. Curran was predeceased by two brothers, John and Louis. Surviving are two nephews and their wives, James and Patricia Curran of Manalapan, and John and Kazuyo Curran of River Edge. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, Manalapan, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, was in charge of arrangements.

      Louis Fochesato

      Mr. Fochesato, 61, of Englishtown, died Aug. 27 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Newark, he had resided in Bloomfield before moving to Englishtown seven years ago. Prior to retiring, he was an accountant for Lord & Taylor in New York City. He was a former parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church, Nutley. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Tara and Glenn Lovrich of North Arlington; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda and William Tortoriello of Howell; and two nephews. A funeral liturgy was offered at Holy Family Church, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the National Stroke Association, 96 Inverness Drive East, Suite 1, Englewood, CO 80112-5112.

      John W. Borden

      Mr. Borden, 82, of Marlboro, died Aug. 28 at home. Born in Woodbury, Gloucester County, he had resided in Marlboro for the past 65 years. Prior to retiring, he was a mechanic for Marlboro Chrysler Plymouth. Mr. Borden was a member of the Old Brick Reformed Church, Marlboro, where he belonged to the consistory as well as the Couples and Fellowship clubs. He was also chairman and treasurer of Marlboro Boy Scout Troop No. 86. Surviving are his wife, Doris King Borden; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Kathy Borden of Clark, and John and Debbie Borden of Marlboro; a sister, Ruth Weatherup of Utica, N.Y.; and six grandchildren. Memorial services were held at the Old Brick Church, with Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Old Brick Reformed Church, P.O.       Robert L. Gross

      Mr. Gross, 81, of Hazlet, died Aug. 29 at Bartley Health Care, Jackson. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he resided in Weehawken before moving to Hazlet 50 years ago. He was a lab director at Metallurgical Industries Inc., Tinton Falls, for 23 years, retiring in 1990. Mr. Gross served with the U.S. Army Air Corps as an aerial gunner during World War II and flew 35 missions over Europe, and was awarded the Silver Medal. He was predeceased by his wife, Mathilda Gross, in 2001; and a daughter-in-law, Ivy Gross, in 2002. Mr. Gross is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Herbert Massa of Howell; a son, Stephen Gross of Howell; a sister, Carole Henning of Toms River; a brother, James Gross of Holmdel; and three grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, Keansburg. Arrangements were by the Day Funeral Home, Keyport.       Sidney Safier

      Mr. Safier, 95, of Freehold Township, died Aug. 3 at his daughter's home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had lived there and in Oceanside, Long Island, N.Y., as well as in Boynton Beach, Fla., before moving to Freehold Township three years ago. A professional musician, he played the violin. He also owned ladies' clothing stores in Brooklyn and Bayside, Queens, N.Y. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Greenspun Safier. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Larry Liebowitz, with whom he had lived; a son, Martin Safier; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A graveside service was held at New Montefiore Cemetery, Pinelawn, Long Island. Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.

      Susan Amy Cohen

      Mrs. Cohen, 55, of Marlboro, died Aug. 6 at Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center, New Brunswick. Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., she moved to Marlboro 23 years ago. Mrs. Cohen was a teacher at Congregation Sons of Israel, Manalapan, for 10 years and was then employed by the East Brunswick Board of Education as a teacher for 12 years. She taught second and third grade at Robert Frost Elementary School, East Brunswick. An adviser to the Frost Student Council, she was also involved in the Great Books Reading Club and Writing Club, and organized the Sunshine Fund as well. She also taught for eight years in the East Brunswick School District Summer Academy program, was involved in home instruction for ill children, and was a strong advocate of teaching cultural diversity and tolerance. In 2002, Mrs. Cohen received the Frost School Governor's Teacher of the Year Award. She earned her bachelor's degree from Queens College, Queens, N.Y., and a master's degree from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, N.Y. Mrs. Cohen is survived by her husband of 34 years, Neal; a daughter and son-in-law, Dana and Jason Kaufman of Marlboro; two sons, Darren Cohen of Key Biscayne, Fla., and Justin Cohen of Chicago and his companion, Sheri Estabrook; her mother, Ruth Baskin Siller of Delray Beach, Fla.; a brother, Eugene Baskin of Baltimore; and two grandsons. Services were held at Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Manalapan, followed by interment at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin section of Woodbridge. Memorial donations may be made to the Robert Frost School PTA, 65 Frost Ave., East Brunswick 08816.

      Joseph A. Drewingo

      Mr. Drewingo, 80, of North Brunswick, died Aug. 6 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. Born in Avoca, Pa., he resided in Old Forge, Pa., before relocating to North Brunswick fin 1951. He was a manager at Permacel Tape, North Brunswick, for 40 years, retiring in 1993. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, New Brunswick. He was a member of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Lena Mattei Drewingo; two daughters, Patricia Hopkins of Manalapan, and Mary Linda Todd of Greenville, N.Y.; three sisters, Agnes Yukobowsky of Edison, Francie Krykevich of Old Bridge, and Mary Piehota of Dupont Pa., and three grandsons. Burial was at Old Forge Cemetery, Pa. Arrangements were by Selover Funeral Home, North Brunswick.

      E. Dorothy Dean Oderio

      Mrs. Oderio, 77, of Aberdeen, died Aug. 7 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold. Born in Pittsburgh, she resided in West New York, prior to moving to Aberdeen 38 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Benedict's Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. She is survived by her husband, Robert Oderio; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Donna and Wade Bates of Jackson, Patty and Mike Vosk of Doylestown, Pa., Barbara and Tom Cole of Freehold, and Diane Oderio of Edison; a sister, Joanne Deighen of Naples, Fla.; and two grandchildren. Entombment was at St. Gabriel's Cemetery, Marlboro. Arrangements were by Day Funeral Home, Keyport. Memorial donations may be made to American Lung Association, 1600 Route 22 east, Union 07083.
