      Pupils honored by school board

HOWELL - At its May 17 meeting, the Board of Education rolled out the red carpet to recognize the Howell K-8 school district's outstanding pupil achievements.

A group of about 100 students received awards from a variety of disciplines, fields and organizations.

The recognized students were participants and winners of: the Student Achiev-ers awards, the New Jersey Student Association Competition, Student Government Day, the Johns Hopkins Program 2006, the Monsignor Donovan 13th Annual Scholastic Olympics, the Monmouth County Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey's Species on the Edge Art and Essay Contest, the New Jersey Math League Contest, the Luna Kaufman Annual Writing Contest, the Monmouth Vicinage Law Day Essay Contest, the Optimist Club Oratorical Competition and the Music K-8 Magazine Cover Contest.

Tony Novembre presented selected faculty members with $1,000 grants for classroom projects they have worked on as part of the Howell Township Educa-tional Foundation.

As the students came up to receive their awards, board President Mary Cerretani said the young people consistently prove they are among the best in the state. She thanked the students' advisers from in and out of the classroom.

"We appreciate what our parents and our teachers have done to get our students here tonight," she said. "Congratu-lations."
