Annual book sale supports AAUW's education goals

FREEHOLD - Thousands of books await readers at the annual used book sale of the Freehold Area Branch of the American Association of University Women, June 7-10. The sale will be at the Freehold Reformed Church, 67 W. Main Street.

June 7 will be a preview night from 5-9 p.m. with an entrance fee of $7. Customers have first choice of books to purchase that night. There is no fee for the other days. On June 8-9 the hours of the book sale are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on June 10 the hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Profits help to fund scholarships and community projects.

The annual book sale has been held for more than 30 years, according to long-time member and New Jersey state AAUW President Joan Odud. It has been a fundraiser for educational activities on the national and local levels. The Freehold Area Branch recently honored the senior girl from each of the six high schools in the Freehold Regional High School District who had the highest academic average at the end of the third marking period. The young women each received a certificate and a monetary award. In the fall, two scholarships are given to women over the age of 25 who have returned to college.

According to the organization, the members feel it is worth the work that must be done over the months of collecting and sorting books, and then running the sale, to promote the aim of AAUW - education for women. On the national level the Freehold Area Branch contributes to fellowships for women working on their doctorates through the AAUW Educational Foundation.

Prices for hard cover books are $1.50 and paperback books are 50 cents and up. Some books are specifically priced. Because of space limitations, donations of books are no longer being accepted. Collection will begin again in the fall. For any other questions, call Barbara Krantz at (732) 536-3642.
