      Obituaries

      Peter V. DeFilippo

      Mr. DeFilippo, 86, of Middletown, died March 26 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in South Amboy, he was a lifelong resident of the Middletown and Red Bank area. Before his retirement, Mr. DeFilippo was a track foreman for Central Jersey Railroad, later Conrail, Red Bank. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals. He was predeceased by his wife, Vera DeFilippo, in 1991. He is survived by a daughter, Antoinette Brown of Bowling Green, Ohio; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Anthony J. DeFilippo of Bowling Green, and Charles F. and Kathy DeFilippo of Middletown; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Colette DeFilippo of Florida, and Chris and Anne DeFilippo of Middletown; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Rose Marass of Rumson, Lucy Dyal of Florida, and Josephine and Ozzie Green of the Wickatunk section of Marlboro; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Burial took place at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. The John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown, was in charge of arrangements.

      Marianne Phyllis Rosen

      Mrs. Rosen, 59, of Freehold, died March 26 at home. Born in Newark, she had lived in Hillside before moving to Freehold in 1972. A graduate of Montclair State Teachers College, Upper Montclair, she earned a master's degree from Kean University, Union, and received her learning disabilities teacher consultant (LDTC) certification from Georgian Court College, Lakewood. Prior to retiring in 2005, she was employed by the Old Bridge Township Board of Education as a learning disabilities specialist for 37 years. She was a member of the Old Bridge Board of Education Association and the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA). She was also a former president of the Freehold Township High School Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO). In addition, she was an active parishioner of St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church, Freehold Township, where she served as a Eucharistic minister. Surviving are her husband, Steven Rosen; a son, David Rosen of Freehold; three daughters, Jennifer Rosen of Philadelphia, Stacy Mehlberg of Arlington, Va., and Allison Rosen of Harrisonburg, Va.; a sister, Lois Quinlan of Old Bridge; and four grandchildren. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, followed by interment at St. Gertrude's Cemetery, Colonia section of Woodbridge. Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to Forest Moon Inc., P.O. Box 164, Jacksonville, VT 05342.

      Dorothy Truax

      Mrs. Truax, 76, of Keansburg, died March 28 at the Arnold Walter Nursing Home, Holmdel. Born in Roselle, she had lived in New York City before moving to Keansburg more than 50 years ago. Before her retirement in 1996, Mrs. Truax was a custodian for the Hazlet Township School System. Prior to that, she was employed by RCA in Avenel and Lily Tulip in Hazlet. She was predeceased by her husband, Elmer, in 1962; a sister, Eleanor McPartland; and a son, Craig Truax. Mrs. Truax is survived by four sons and three daughters-in-law, Edward and Patricia Truax of Howell, Gary and Susan Truax of Waynesboro, Tenn., Timothy and GiGi Roel Truax of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Kerry Truax of Port Orchard, Wash.; a sister, Joan Cervello, and a brother, James Weeks, both of Jackson Heights, N.Y.; and six grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, Keansburg. The John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown, was in charge of arrangements.

      Eugene "Whitey" Shiber

      Mr. Shiber, 77, of East Brunswick, died March 25 in Barbara E. Cheung Memorial Hospice, Edison. Prior to his retirement in 1994, he was employed as a mechanic with Permacel Tape Manufacturing, North Brunswick, where he worked for 34 years. Surviving are his wife, Joan Hampton Shiber; four daughters, Linda Cavalier of Sayreville, Cindy Biddle of Englishtown, Darlene Sneden of Upper Montclair and Lori Shiber of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Robert of Portage, Pa.; three sisters, Eileen Shiber, Lucille Whiteford and Laverne Conrad, all of Portage; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson. A service was held at Brunswick Memorial Home, East Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice or to Barbara E. Cheung Memorial Hospice, 1 Roosevelt Drive, Edison, NJ 08837.

      Bessie Person

      Mrs. Person, 91, of Freehold, died March 26 at Montgomery Care Center, Freehold Township. She was born in Easton, Md., and had been a resident of Freehold since 1927. Before her retirement, Mrs. Person was an attendant at Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital, Marlboro. She was a member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church, where she served as a stewardess, and the Lee Gibson Temple No. 1014, both of Freehold. She was predeceased by two brothers, John Jackson and Harry Jackson Jr., and two sisters, Alice Dixon and Fannie Major. Mrs. Person is survived by a son, Sterling R. Jackson of Ohio; a daughter, Beverly Person of Trenton; a sister, Reba Stanton of Lakewood; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held at the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, followed by interment at Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold Township.
