Brookdale Community College will offer free training to individuals who work at least 30 hours per week at any business in Monmouth County.

The offerings are available through a literacy-training grant by the state Department of Labor & Workforce Development awarded to the state Community College Consortium for Workforce and Economic Development.

Basic Skills Mathematics and Basic PC (personal computer) Skills will be offered at a variety of locations. Prospective participants must register no later than April 7.

The mathematics course will cover addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals and ratios. The computer course will provide the fundamentals of the Internet, Windows, Word and e-mail, in hands-on sessions.

The Western Monmouth campus in Freehold Township will offer the mathematics course 6-10 p.m. Thursdays, April 20-June 8; the course code is XPRAG 056.

The PC course will be offered at the Western Monmouth branch Wednesday evenings, April 17-June 7. The course code is XCOMO 039.

Tips for the older driver offered at police academy

Monmouth County Sheriff Joseph W. Oxley, Office on Aging Executive Director John A Wanat, and N.J. State Triad will host a free three-hour program, "Senior Safe Driving," at the Monmouth County Police Academy, 2000 Kozloski Road, Freehold Township, March 28 from 9 a.m. to noon. The program is sponsored by the National Sheriffs Association and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Deputy Sheriff Jim Jensen, Douglas County, Colo., will conduct the training.

Topics covered will include "Strategies for Keeping Your Keys," "Who's Doing What to Assist Older Drivers?," "Changes in Your Body That Impact Safety," "Avoiding Intersection Collisions," "Drugs That Impair" and "Personal and Community Resources for the Older Driver."

Program to focus on

Jews in WWII China

A special program, "When the Holocaust Moves East: Or, What Do You Mean We Are Going to Eat Chinese Food Every Night?" will be held May 2 at the Freehold Township Senior Center, 116 Jackson Mill Road.

In 1939, about 20,000 Jews were living in Shanghai, China, which was one of the only ports that remained open to refugees from Hitler's Nazi regime. Rabbi Brooks Susman of Congregation Kol Am will provide a historical framework as attendees enjoy a Chinese dinner, which will be followed by the world premiere showing of his interview with Ilse Bernstein, a survivor of that era (1939-49).

The event is open to the community. The only cost involved is $5 for dinner. There is no charge for those who wish to come only for the interview. Reservations are required. MySpace.com is focus

of talk for adults April 4

Marlboro High School will host a program on MySpace.com at 7 p.m. April 4 in the high school's auditorium, Route 79.

Sponsored by the Marlboro Township Alliance, Marlboro Police Department, Marlboro Township schools and Marlboro High School, the event is for adults only.

Detective William Wei, of the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, will discuss the Web site where teens log on and post their photos, names, schools, addresses and even phone numbers, and the potential dangers of revealing too much information. For additional information, call (732) 617-0100.

Bereavement support group for adults

HUGS (Help Us Grieve Someone), a free, confidential, nondenominational bereavement support group for adults, meets at Old Tennent Presbyterian Church, Tennent section of Manalapan. The group meets twice a month on Mondays at 7:30 p.m. The loss can be recent or from years gone by.

The Mid-Jersey Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is looking for volunteers to assist in the coordination of this year's MS Walk.

The MS Walk is scheduled for April 23 at Lake Como, Edison, Flemington, Freehold, Hamilton, North Brunswick, Sandy Hook, Seaside Park and Somerville.

Volunteers help with planning the event, setting up on walk day, registering walkers, monitoring the route, managing snack stations, cleaning up or cheering on the walkers.

The Freehold Borough YMCA is in need of counselors for its summer recreation camp, which will run June 26-Aug. 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Community welcome

to attend Kid Safe Day

The Manalapan-Englishtown Educa-tion Foundation, in conjunction with the Manalapan-Englishtown Education Association and the Manalapan Police Department, will sponsor a Kid Safe Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 25 at the Wemrock Brook School, 118 Millhurst Road, Manalapan. The event is free.

All children are welcome to attend the event without regard to their town of residence. Each child will receive a passport book, fingerprints, a photo and a DNA test kit. There will be activities for children in the school gymnasium.
