Outpouring of support a tribute to community
They need it more than we do. That’s been the sentiment of many area residents, business owners and organizations who, like most Americans, have watched the fall-out of Hurricane Katrina in disbelief over the past few weeks. The response to the devastation along the Gulf Coast can only be described as heartwarming, as countless citizens are doing what they can to help. For many, it has simply been overwhelming to see report after report of the loss and desperation among hurricane survivors. From the earlier cries for help that went largely unanswered for several days, to the recovery effort for a region that has been severely damaged, its survivors now facing homelessness, the nation has watched and wept for the victims. But as hundreds of thousands begin to look toward rebuilding their lives, there are clearly many more who want to help. Countless people and organizations in central New Jersey alone are lending a hand in just about every way possible. At Greater Media Newspapers, we have heard from children as young as 5 years old finding innovative ways to help out; from teenagers and ordinary citizens who are holding fundraisers with the sole beneficiary being the flood victims. We are seeing businesses ranging from restaurants to real estate agencies organize events, donate proceeds and match grants to aid in the recovery. Some local people have also offered their homes to displaced Gulf Coast residents, while others are donating home furnishings and clothing. Meanwhile, many area firefighters and emergency service personnel have offered their own services in the rescue effort. Some have gone to help, while others remain on standby. These are just a handful of the efforts under way among local people, and there are sure to be plenty more in the weeks ahead. Most residents of Monmouth County may never meet the people they are helping, but such selfless acts in this unique situation is a tribute to their compassion.
