on illegals a start

Slowly, very slowly, federal officials seem to be getting the message that a majority of Americans want them to do something to stem the flow of illegal immigrants from Mexico and South America into the United States.

Estimates in published reports claim the United States is home to between 8 million and 10 million people who have crossed our borders illegally. That is a crime that breaks federal law, which law enforcement agencies are charged with enforcing.

Those who favor the continuation of illegal immigration and claim that because the federal government has heretofore chosen to ignore the problem it has no right to enforce the nation’s laws now, are way off base.

Frankly speaking, it’s too bad if some people don’t like the fact a majority of Americans have had enough of illegal immigration and are demanding action.

Elected officials who want to stay elected can read the way the wind is blowing and they appear to be starting to get the message that it is time for action on this critical issue. Within the past week, news stories have reported that more than 150 people who officials said were known to have entered the United States illegally from Mexico and South Amer-ica were arrested upon their arrival at Newark Liberty Inter-national Airport and held for deportation hearings.

Someone, somewhere is listening to what Americans are saying.

A local newspaper recently published a series of stories about the influx of Hispanic immigrants to Freehold Borough.

Without any attribution whatsoever, a reporter stated the following in one story: "And though most business owners will not admit on the record to employing undocumented Latinos, many businesses would collapse without the affordable and available labor these Latinos present."

Give us a break. That statement was completely inappropriate, given the fact it was the reporter, and not an economics expert, who said it. There was no evidence provided to prove that statement is fact and we reject the opinion, with no supporting evidence, that businesses need illegal immigrants to survive.

Americans want secure borders. The times demand it. The message may finally be getting through to people who can do something about a situation that has been allowed to spiral out of control for too long.
