Cynthia Savino ran Sunday’s New York City Marathon in a personal best 3:06:25, which placed her fourth in her class and 52nd overall among women runners.

This was the 12th marathon of Savino’s career. In addition to running New York, she has completed the Boston (five times), Chicago, Seattle and Portland marathons.

Savino is a 1979 graduate of Freehold Borough High School. In 1979, the Colonials had an undefeated season in track and field winning a Shore Conference Division title.

Monmouth University’s Nick Pellegrino finished fourth at the Northeast Conference Cross Country Championships held Saturday at Holmdel Park.

Running on the 5-mile college course, Pellegrino, a senior, clocked 26:25.8

Pellegrino was the Hawks’ No. 1 runner, and that helped Monmouth finish fourth (121) behind St. Francis, Pa. (38), whose Ryan Sheehan was the individual champion (25:51.2). Pellegrino is a graduate of Marlboro High School.

Jen Gaffey, a sophomore at Monmouth, was 25th in the women’s NEC championship, clocking 20:46.7 for the 5,000-meter race. The Hawk women were third (64) in a close, three-way battle that went to St. Francis, Pa. (52), with Sacred Heart (58), second. Sacred Heart’s Katherine Wrinkle was the women’s individual champion, in 18:50.3.

Gaffey is a graduate of Freehold Township High School.

Freehold Township’s Brad Brach and Freehold Borough’s Steve Morreale were all-stars in the Atlantic Baseball Confederation, a high school fall baseball league. Both players participated in the league’s all-star game in front of college coaches and major league baseball representatives. Brach and Morreale are seniors at their respective high schools, and teamed up to lead the Freehold Township Little League to Senior League District and Region championships.
