Sheriff’s Office first to achieve five-star rating

Monmouth County Sheriff Joseph W. Oxley has announced that the Youth Detention Center has earned national accreditation by the American Correctional Association (ACA).

On Aug. 15, the Sheriff’s Office held a ceremony to recognize this achievement, and to celebrate the record-setting "Five Star" national accreditation.

The Youth Detention Center was found to be 100 percent compliant for all mandatory ACA standards, and approximately 98.6 percent compliant for nonmandatory standards.

With the accreditation of the Youth Detention Center, the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office is the first agency in the United States to earn national accreditation in five distinct areas of operation. The Youth Detention Center joins the Law Enforcement, Corrections, Correctional Healthcare, and 911 Communications Center in this accomplishment.

Accreditation is a voluntary process of external peer review.

"During the tour of the Youth Detention Center, the auditor showed me her clipboard full of check marks. She explained that each check mark symbolized an ‘exceptional‚’ and through her many years of auditing, the most check marks one agency had received was two.

Our Youth Detention Center had 12, and one ‘wow‚’ which had never before been granted," Undersheriff Cliff Daniels said at the ceremony.
