Area doctors elected
to board of trustees

Dr. Norman Back, chairman of the OB/GYN Department, and Dr. Steven Mishkin, chairman of the Ophthalmology Department, have both been elected to two-year terms on the Board of Trustees for CentraState Healthcare System, Freehold Township.

Back joined CentraState’s medical staff in 1985. He earned his medical degree from Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, and completed his residency at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. He is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and is a Fellow in the Amer-ican College of Obstetrics and Gynecol-ogy.

Mishkin joined CentraState’s medical staff in 1988. He earned his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, The Bronx, N.Y., and completed his residency in opthalmology at Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Ein-stein College. He is board certified in ophthalmology and is a Diplomate of Ophthalmology.

Associated auxiliaries

CentraState Healthcare System’s Associated Auxiliaries presented checks exceeding $60,000 to CentraState officials at its annual meeting on Feb. 1. The check presentation ceremony was held during a luncheon at Our House Restaurant, Howell.

CentraState will use the funds to enhance services and programs for patients and their families and purchase state-of-the-art equipment.

CentraState’s Associated Auxiliaries is comprised of volunteers from the community who have been raising awareness and funds for CentraState for more than 30 years. They have raised more than $2 million over the years, including a $50,000 donation to the Radiation Therapy Center in 2002.

Eighth-grader wins

school geography bee

Daniel Handlin, an eighth-grade pupil at the Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Monmouth County, Marlboro, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on Jan. 10, and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship.

The school-level bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 15th annual National Geographic Bee.

Thousands of schools around the United States and in the five U.S. territories participate in the contest. The school winners, including Handlin, will now take a written test; up to 100 of the top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in their state bee on April 4.

In the Schechter School bee, eighth-graders Eli Goldman placed second and Michelle Fried was third.

The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the state champions and teacher escorts to participate in the national championship on May 20-21. The first-place national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society.

Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek will moderate the national finals. The program will air on the National Geographic Channel, and later on PBS stations.
