The New Jersey Historical Commission is accepting nominations until Nov. 1 for its 2002 Mildred Barry Garvin Prize. The $1,000 prize is an award given for outstanding efforts in making students aware of and interested in African-American history. Teachers, counselors and school librarians who have helped students learn about the African-American past and how it relates to New Jersey are eligible. Nominees may be teachers of grades K-12 in a public, private, parochial or charter school. More ... On Sept. 9 the Monmouth County Park System will sponsor its annual Sprint Triathlon at Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park, Long Branch. The event will begin at 7:45 a.m. The Sprint Triathlon consists of a quarter-mile ocean swim, a 13-mile bike ride and a 4-mile run.
