      Sport Shorts

      With 29 points on 10 goals and nine assists, Freehold’s Denise Buckley is the leading scorer on the women’s soccer team for The College of New Jersey’s, Ewing, which is headed for the 2000 Division III National Championships. The Lions, 18-1, recently won the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship, 1-0, over William Paterson University, Wayne. That win put the Lions in the Division III tournament where they will begin play in the Mid-Atlantic Regionals.

      Buckley, a junior, is a midfielder. She has scored 24 goals and assisted on 12 others during her career. She is a graduate of Freehold Borough High School where she helped lead the Colonials to the Central Jersey Group II state sectional title, as well as the Shore Conference Tournament and Shore Conference Division championships.

      Defender Linda Talarico of Manalapan is another key member of the Lions team. Talarico is a senior co-captain. She has two goals and two assists this year for The College of New Jersey. She is a graduate of Manalapan High School.

      Howell’s Marnie Bentley is one of the top newcomers on The College of New Jersey, Ewing, women’s swimming team. The freshman is expected to help the Lions out in the 500-yard freestyle and in the breaststroke and individual medley.

      The Lions were 9-1 in dual meets in 1999-2000 and won the Metropolitan Conference, Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) championships.

      Bentley is a graduate of the Peddie School, Hightstown.
